Retailers and Distributors

In Alberta, you have the freedom to select your electricity and natural gas provider. This choice allows you to decide between a regulated rate company, which offers rates set by your local regulatory body, and a competitive rate company, which sets its own prices based on market conditions.

The decision you make should be based on your specific location in Alberta, as different providers may serve different areas. To find the best energy provider, plan, and payment options that suit your needs, it’s essential to consider your residential or work location within the province.

It’s important to note, however, that while you have the choice to select your energy provider, the same doesn’t apply to your Distribution companies. These companies are responsible for the physical delivery of electricity and natural gas to your home or business, and their areas are determined by geographical and regulatory boundaries.

NOTE: You can’t choose your Distribution company; they are assigned based on your location. The list of Distribution companies is provided for informational purposes only, to help you understand the structure of the energy system in your area.

Regulated Rate Companies

In Alberta, if you haven’t signed a contract with an electricity or natural gas provider, you’ll automatically receive services from a Regulated Retailer.

These regulated rates are set by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) and may vary each month.

If you’re new, it’s common to initially set up services with a Regulated Retailer. Once you’re connected, you can then explore other options, such as competitive energy contracts. We have a list of Regulated Retailers available for reference.

Those living in rural areas without access to regulated retailers might be in the service territory of a Rural Electrification Association or a Natural Gas Co-op. For assistance in these cases, contact AEP’s Mediation Team for more information and guidance on your utility options.

Distribution Companies

Distribution companies in Alberta are responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure for power and natural gas delivery. They collaborate with your chosen retailer to ensure accurate billing, facilitated by automated meter readings, and manage services like connecting or disconnecting your power during a move.

Your utility bill’s delivery portion includes distribution charges, as well as costs for transmission, municipal franchise fees, rate riders, and balancing pool contributions.

These charges are consistent regardless of whether you choose a Regulated or Competitive Retailer, as the distribution company and the delivery fees on your bill remain the same.

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) oversees and approves the distribution rates, ensuring they are fair and allow for the necessary operation, maintenance, and investment in the utility infrastructure.

Natural Gas Co-ops

A rural gas co-op in Alberta is a not-for-profit cooperative, established and operating under the Rural Utilities Act. It owns and operates its own distribution system and provides natural gas to its members within a designated rural franchise area.

If you’re unable to find contact information for your specific gas co-op, or if you have any questions about the contact list or about rural gas co-ops in general, you should reach out to the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops. They are a resource for information and can assist with inquiries related to these cooperatives.

Competitive Rate Companies

In Alberta, you have the option to purchase your electricity and natural gas from a variety of licensed Competitive Retailers. This gives you the flexibility to enter into a contract with a retailer that best suits your energy needs.

When you decide to sign a contract with a competitive retailer, it’s important to note that the switch from your current service to the new one typically takes about 10 to 15 days. However, in certain cases, this process can extend up to 90 days, depending on various factors specific to your situation.

To ensure a smooth transition, it’s advisable to confirm with your chosen retailer the exact date when your new service will begin.
